About

The Northeast Regional Food Guide, conceptualized by Jennifer Wilkins, PhD, RD and developed by her with Jennifer Bokaer-Smith in the mid-1990s, is the first and only regional food guide for in the United States.

This consumer-oriented nutrition education tool is based in design on the USDA 1992 Food Pyramid and, as such, communicates the concepts of moderation, proportionality, and balance in the diet. It also conveys regionalism and seasonality in food choices to support public health and simultaneously encourage sustainable and community-based food systems.

The Northeast Regional Food Guide includes two major components: a food pyramid, and seasonal produce availability lists. A comparison of the Northeast Regional Food Guide with the 1992 USDA Food Pyramid describes similarities and differences between the two.
